Benazir Bhutto: Oxford University
built 226 days ago
In a sense, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a political and cultural version of an honor killing. Bhutto was the first woman Prime Minister of a Muslim nation and she symbolized an unacceptably Western form of female ambition and achievement. She had attended Harvard/Radcliffe and Oxford. She spoke English—perhaps more fluently than she spoke her native Sindi or Urdu. She once dressed as Western women do. Indeed, many Muslim women from wealthy families, including educators and feminists, have done so for a long time.

Bhutto was born in Karachi in 1953. After completing her early education in Pakistan, she attended Radcliffe College and Oxford University. Along with obtaining a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, she ... completed a course in International Law and Diplomacy at Oxford.

Throughout, Bhutto -- a graduate of Harvard and Oxford -- emphasized the roots of the trouble: clashing forces that aim to control Southern Asia. Democracy and modernization stand on one side while religious fanaticism and theocracy loom on the other, she said.
