Despite her pregnancy, Bhutto campaigned for 15 hours a day. When her child was born prematurely, she went straight back into the election campaign and in November as leader of the PPP won the election. How did it feel?

True to form, Bhutto manipulated Musharraf to erase the charges against her, promising not to return to Pakistan until after national elections. She then broke that promise. But once she sensed that even her stalwarts were appalled at an arranged political marriage to a dictator, she spurned Musharraf and became her own woman again.

There were mixed opinions today on what impact the marriage would have on Miss Bhutto's campaign to unseat Mr. Zia, who has promised elections in 1990. Her press secretary, Baseer Riaz, said the traditional marriage would shield her from the criticism of Islamic fundamentalists, who have attempted to portray her as an advocate of modern, Westernized ideas about the role of women.

Bhutto returned to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, after reaching an understanding with President Pervez Musharraf by which she was granted amnesty and all corruption charges were withdrawn. She was assassinated on December 27, 2007, after departing a PPP rally in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, two weeks before the scheduled Pakistani general election of 2008 where she was a leading opposition candidate.

Her party was soundly defeated in the elections that followed in November 1990, and Bhutto became an opposition leader in the parliament. Subsequent attempts to oust the ruling party resulted in Bhutto’s deportation to the city of Karachi in 1992, and she was temporarily banned from entering Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

On Thursday afternoon, Benazir completed her speech well ahead of the sunset deadline that the election commission had set for political rallies. As she was leaving the ground, the suicide bomber struck. Bhutto’s driver tried to drive away following the blast but it is unclear what obstacle came in the way.
