On today's "Ellen", Ben Stiller comments on the health of longtime friend and frequent co-star Owen Wilson, who was hospitalized in August after attempting suicide. Stiller says Wilson is doing "really well".

Now Ben slipped back into the director's chair for Heat Vision And Jack. This saw Jack Black as a brilliant ex-astronaut whose partner is a talking motorbike, voiced by Owen Wilson. Made for the Fox network, it was a pilot for a series that was to spoof such programmes as Knight Rider. Sadly, Fox declined the option and the series was never made. Disappointed, Stiller did at least hook up with one of the show's performers, Christine Taylor. She had broken into TV playing Margaret Barnes in Dallas, then popped up in such comedies as Friends, Seinfeld, Ellen and Caroline In The City, as well as playing Marcia in both Brady Bunch movies.

By the end of 2004, Stiller had completed Meet the Fockers, the sequel to the 2000 hit Meet the Parents. He was ... hard at work on a project that had been a dream of his for several years, a screen adaptation of the novel What Makes Sammy Run, written by Bud Schulberg. In 2004 Wilson wrapped up production on The Wendell Baker Story, a family affair since Wilson wrote the script with brother Luke. The movie was also co-directed by Luke and older brother Andrew. He also teamed with director Wes Anderson once again for The Life Acquatic (2004).

Spring 2004 promised a rebound when the electrifying duo of Stiller and Owen Wilson returned to the big screen with director Todd Phillips' celluloid recycling job Starsky & Hutch. Though Stiller and Wilson seemed the ideal pair for such a conceptually rich re-imagining of 1970s television, and the film boasted wonderful villainous turns by rapper Snoop Dogg and Vince Vaughn, reviews were once again lackluster and the film struggled to find an audience. Yet Starsky & Hutch did actually reap a profit, which (in a business sense) placed it miles ahead of Stiller's next film. Released a mere two months after Starsky & Hutch, the Barry Levinson comedy Envy sports a wacky premise; it explores the comic rivalry that erupts between two longtime friends and neighbors when one invents a product that makes dog excrement disappear. It ... boasts a marvelous cast, replete with Stiller, the maniacal Jack Black, and the brilliant Christopher Walken. But for whatever reason (speculated by some as the film's inability to exploit the invention at the story's center) the film's sense of humor failed to catch fire and Envy died a quick box-office death.

After his recent suicide attempt, Owen Wilson dropped out of the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder and his other yet-to-be-filmed projects remain in limbo. But The Darjeeling Limited never wavered from its original release date. It pulls into theaters Saturday right after kicking off the New York Film Festival.

Something new in the movie version is the plot line that Stiller's character is living up to his mother's reputation as a top-notch cop-something that was Owen's idea. Stiller clearly sees the parallel between the movie and his own life. From the moment he mentions his mother, he is eager to express his view that "she is an incredible actress."
