Jeremy Cothran of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that OF Ben Johnson is close to a minor-league deal with the Mets that includes an invite to spring training. In 27 at-bats with the Mets last season, Johnson hit .185 with an RBI.

In 2002, Johnson made his return to Australia, where he was the head coach for the Kuiyam Pride U23 Men. The following year (2003), Johnson served as head coach for both the Kuiyam Pride U23 Men and the Kuiyam Pride Women. The Pride Women competed in the professional Australian Basketball League. Following the 2003 season, Johnson was named Queensland Australian Basketball League Women's Coach of the Year.

Johnson, 6-6, 329, was taken with the Lions’ first pick in the seventh round in April’s 2003 NFL Draft. He started 29 straight games at left tackle to finish his career at Wisconsin, missing only one snap total in his last two seasons, and registered 253 knockdowns.
