Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals - Lifeline Combining shuddering, groove-laden funky soul and folky handcrafted acoustics, singer/songwriter Ben Harper had cult status during the course of the '90s but gained wider attention toward the end of the decade. Harper combined elements of classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, Jimi Hendrix, and '90s jam bands like Blues Traveler, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Phish, which meant that he was embraced by critics and college kids alike. Though he never had a hit album, his body of work sold consistently and he toured constantly, building a solid, dedicated fan base. A native of California, Harper grew up listening to blues, folk, soul, R&B, and reggae. As a child, he started playing guitar, and began to perform regularly as a preteen. During his adolescence, he turned toward acoustic slide guitar, which would eventually become his signature instrument.

Ben Harper. Associated Press photo by Jeff Christensen Ben Harper has finally found his musical equilibrium. Always mixing folk and soul, rock and reggae, Harper released the two-disc set "Both Sides of the Gun" last year to give musical expression to his polarities. Although acknowledging those genre-switching tendencies didn't make them go away, it did allow Harper to rebalance them. On "Lifeline," he has created a near-perfect blend of old school and new, naughty and nice, candid and haughty, soul and rock. But he's done something else, too: For the first time, Harper is singing with an abandon and fearlessness that he has not shown on record before. Stealing moments from his autobiography or raging about headlines, he creates musical still lifes that leap off the CD and suck listeners into his universe, where politics are righteous, wrongs are redressed and love is intimate, sacred and sometimes dangerous.
