AFFLECK Affleck is, no question, kind of a self-important ass. On one level, anyway. (Yes, he has more than one level. But maybe not more than two.) I think that, post-”Good Will Hunting” — and especially post-Oscar for same — he had some idea that he had to act less like the funny, loud-mouthed boob he played in the movie and more like the tuxedoed scribe who accepted the award for writing it. Except I really think his natural personality is a lot closer to Chuckie Sullivan’s, and that if he’d just make his peace with that and quit showing up on red carpets plying his squinty Blue Steel look or stumping for Kerry (dude, we know you didn’t vote in the last election, so…don’t help), we’d all like him much better, and he’d be much happier.

"Good Will Hunting" finally premiered in December 1997, and Affleck was wildly entertaining as the tried-and-true best friend of Damon's un-ambitious janitor who is torn between worlds when he is discovered to be a mathematical genius. The film's coming-of-age theme, career highlight performance from Robin Williams, and the dynamic chemistry of Damon, Affleck and their ball-busting pals won over audiences and critics alike, with the film receiving 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, which the duo took home. Even before the awards ceremony... detractors were lined up to contest that these two virtual and handsome unknowns had actually written such an affecting work. Affleck did not take the accusations seriously, but his quip that he and Damon were going to end up like Milli Vanilli with their award repossessed did not help matters.
Director Ben Affleck and actor Casey Affleck arrive to the premiere of "Gone Baby Gone" at Mann Bruin Theater on October 8, 2007 in Westwood, California. The hunky actor was living with Damon and his actor brother Casey Affleck in the mid-90s, and after hordes of failed auditions Damon and Affleck decided to write their own script based on some of their childhood experiences. The history of the tumultuous production of “Good Will Hunting” is a maze of distributors, script re-writes, and a slew of interested directors, but it was Harvey Weinstein at Miramax who finally got the project off the ground with Gus Van Sant at the helm and Robin Williams in a juicy supporting role that ultimately won him an Oscar. Unexpectedly, the film was a huge hit and received nine Oscar nominations, including a screenplay win for Damon and Affleck.

With the release of Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting in 1997 (which was co-executive produced by Smith and co-written by Affleck and Damon), Affleck won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, he's acted in just about everything from action-packed films such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Daredevil and The Sum of All Fears to smaller, more intimate works such as Shakespeare in Love, Bounce and Boiler Room.
