Bell Canada, a subsidiary of BCE Inc. of Montreal, is the largest of Canada's telecommunications companies. It provides telephone service to about 9 million customers in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and in portions of the Northwest Territories. Bell was created by federal Act of Parliament in 1880 and since 1906 has been subject to regulation by a succession of federal regulatory agencies, currently by the Canadian Radio--television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

image_1_small.jpg (8360 bytes) Bell Canada began life in 1880, six years after Alexander Graham Bell's historic long distance call from Brantford to Paris, Ontario. At the end of its first year, the company had telephone exchanges in 13 cities, 2,100 phones in service, 150 employees, and its stock was "selling quietly among good people." Telephone technology was basic: customers turned a crank to signal to the operator that they wanted to make a call.
Bell Canada is the largest communications company in Canada, with over 13 million local access telephone lines serving most of eastern Canada. Bell Canada is committed to providing their residential and business customers with simplicity, value, and convenience in their phone service. The company continually invests in technology to stay ahead of the curve, enabling their wire line and wireless networks to carry far more data and voice traffic than any of their competitors.

The 1950s began an era of rapid technological innovation for Bell Canada. It installed the first permanent television link between two countries in 1953, bringing programs from Buffalo, New York, to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto. Bell opened the first intercity microwave radio relay between Toronto and Montreal in the same year, allowing audiences in the two cities to view the same live program simultaneously. In 1958 the company completed its microwave network, making its coast-to-coast coverage the longest system in the world. Also in 1958, Bell Canada offered Dataphone service, which enabled subscribers to transmit data or text over voice channels at speeds of up to 800 words a minute.
Simplicity is now built-in to every value-added service Bell Canada offers. The company values Motive’s software as an essential part of its continued growth. Having reached nearly 70 percent penetration of its broadband market, Bell Canada is now deep into the territory of mainstream, non-technical consumers.
