As the saying goes, "Bahamas is for bonefish, the Florida Keys is for Tarpon, and Belize is for Permit". One of the neat things about Belize is that you will encounter all three highly sought after species. Although Belize is a small country, fishing opportunities are large and varied. With only a short plane or boat ride, you'll find yourself in the midst of your own big game fish adventure. Tarpon outside of Ambergris Caye, permit from Ambergris to Punta Gorda, bonefish on the flats of the atolls, snook near the mainland; all within an hour or so plane ride....no reservations required. Fishing grounds are endless.

[O]f civil wars, repression and economic difficulties in some Latin American countries, Belize has received over 40,000 immigrants and refugees in the past twenty years, mainly from El Salvador and Guatemala. Despite traditions of ethnic diversity, intermarriages and cultural tolerance, the country's "melting-pot" ideals have increasingly become more theoretical than real.

The settlor (creator) may specify that the laws of another country will govern the trust; if not specified, the Belizean courts will apply Belize law by default. It is possible to draft the trust and specify that particular parts will be governed by the laws of other jurisdictions, and it is possible to specify that in the event of changes in a designated jurisdiction’s laws that yet another jurisdiction’s laws will apply. This provision can be important for "international" trusts insofar as a change of law in a designated jurisdiction may operate to void an important provision of the trust; in that case, the designation of the alternative jurisdiction will help ensure that the trust will be enforced according to the wishes of the settlor.

Let’s face it, Belize fans, this is just one of those kinds of places. Nearly everyone who comes to this country daydreams about owning, or at least renting, a house here. The gorgeous scenery, simple lifestyle, great weather, and friendly people make it very tempting for people even on modest budgets. So far the prices of real estate here haven’t caught up with prices in similar resort communities, so there is always interest from both daydreamers and investors.
