The origin of the name Belize is unclear, but one idea is that it derives from the Spanish pronunciation of the surname of the pirate who created the first settlement in Belize in 1638, Peter Wallace. In 1975, after 13 years of secret and fruitless negotiations, the government of Guatemala demanded that Belize give up all the land south of the Monkey River as a way of settling the dispute.
