The two main rivers in Belgium are the Scheldt and the Meuse. Although generally flat, the terrain becomes increasingly hilly and forested in the southeast (Ardennes) region, where one can find Belgium's highest point, the Signal de Botrange at only 694 metres.

Hainaut is mostly a varied region that for years was the industrial backbone of Belgium and is the region where most of Belgium’s mining, steel making and heavy industry were located. But there are numerous smaller and very picturesque towns in this area as well as numerous breweries including the Trappist monastery and brewery of Chimay.

In time most of the Roman region of Gaul, including Belgium, became part of the Frankish empire. The Frankish king Charlemagne is sometimes regarded as the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted from 800 to 1806 and included Belgium. Sometimes the Holy Roman Emperor had no real authority; sometimes he had a lot.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The USO will send Texas-born comedian Ron White and fellow comic Robert Hawkins to Germany and Belgium, where they will provide laughs to troops serving far from home during the holidays. The duo will travel to several bases where they will perform free shows, "meet and greet" service members and eat Thanksgiving dinner with military personnel. The tour is set for Nov. 20-29, and is co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Installation Management Agency-Europe Region's Morale, Welfare and Recreation office.
