The topography of Belarus was largely shaped by glaciation during the Pleistocene Epoch (1,600,000 to 10,000 years ago). Much of the country consists of flat lowlands separated by low, level-topped hills and uplands. The highest point, Dzyarzhynsk Mountain, is only 1,135 feet (345 metres) above sea level, and more than half the surface area of Belarus lies below 660 feet. The higher areas are formed by ridges of glacial morainic material dating from the Valday glaciation, the last advance of Pleistocene ice in eastern Europe. The largest of the ridges, the Belarusian Ridge, extends northeastward from the Polish border on the southwest to north of Minsk, where it widens into the Minsk Upland before turning eastward to link up with the Smolensk-Moscow Upland. Running transverse to the main Belarusian Ridge, the Ashmyany Upland, consisting of terminal moraines from the same glacial period, lies between Minsk and Vilnius in neighbouring Lithuania.

Belarus is bordered by the following nations: Latvia (north), Lithuania (northwest), Poland (west), Russia (north and east) and Ukraine (south). Since its departure from the Soviet Union, Belarus signed a treaty with Latvia and Lithuania to demarcate the boundaries between the three countries. Ukraine signed a similar agreement with Belarus, though ratification on the Belarusian side is pending. As of 2006, Belarus and Lithuania began to demarcate their border using water buoys.

Belarus was first settled by Slav tribes, who would become modern Byelorussians, in the 6th century AD. It would be a matter of three centuries before the first distinct principalities rose in the area, with the most important being centered on Polotsk (Polatsk). This principality was inherited through marriage by Kievan Rus and became Orthodox Christian.

On January 31- February 1, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women met to consider the third periodic report of Belarus (document CEDAW/C/BLR/3). According to the report, despite the constitutional proclamation of equality between men and women, there is a very significant and ever-increasing gap between declared principles and their de facto implementation. This is confirmed by the problems faced by women in every aspect of their lives: inequality in daily life; employment; remuneration and fulfillment of maternal and child-rearing functions.

Belarus was not the only SSR that used green. Lithuania was another one of them. Lithuania ... uses green on their national flag today. Lithuania and Belarus used the same shade of green when they were in the USSR. The green Lithuania uses now is C100/M55/Y100/K0. Could it be safe to say that the shade of green for the Belarus flag is C100/M55/Y100/K0?
