Belarus is landlocked, relatively flat, and contains large tracts of marshy land. Lakes and rivers punctuate the country. The largest marsh territory is Polesie, which is among the largest marshes in Europe. There are 11,000 lakes in Belarus, but the majority of the lakes are smaller than 0.5 square kilometres (124 acres). Three major rivers run through the country; the Neman River, the Pripyat River, and the Dnepr River. Belarus’ highest point is Dzyarzhynskaya Hara (Dzyarzhynsk Hill), 345 metres (1,132 ft), and its lowest point is on the Neman River, 90 metres (295 ft).

Belarus is a relatively flat country. The difference between its highest point and its lowest point is only 264 meters. The highest point at 346 meters above sea level is Dzyarzhinskaya hill, located in Minsk Province, named after ‘Iron Felix’ Dzerzhinsky the founder of the KGB. The lowest point in Belarus at 90 meters above sea level is Nyman River, one of the three major rivers of Belarus. (the other two are the Prypyat and the Dnepr. The Dnepr is Europe’s third longest river after the Volga and Danube).

Most demographic indicators for Belarus resemble other European countries, notably with both the population growth rate and the natural growth rate in the negative. Mogilev, one of the oldest and largest cities in Belarus, is located in the southeast region of the country. It has many ancient and beautiful sites and increasing areas of environmental protection. The Republic of Belarus is divided territorially into six Oblasts (regions) with their administrative centres in Minsk, Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno and Mogilev. The country includes 118 administrative districts (rayons). The Republic of Belarus includes 110 towns, of which 15 towns have population over 100,000, and 103 urbanised populated localities.

To ensure the future of democracy in Belarus, IRI is training the next generation of political leaders in neighboring countries. These activists, many who are new to the political process and traveling outside of Belarus for the first time, are exposed to other young political activists, local elected officials, and members of parliament. Youth are taught the basics of message development, issue identification, campaign strategy, voter outreach and get-out-the-vote activities.
