Beijing's main airport is the Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) near Shunyi, which is about 20km northeast of Beijing city centre. Most domestic and nearly all international flights arrive and depart at Capital Airport. Capital Airport is the main hub for Air China. It is linked to central Beijing by the Airport Expressway and is a roughly 40-minute drive from the city centre during good traffic hours. In preparation for the 2008 Olympics, another expressway is being built to the Airport, as well as a lightrail system.

Many tourist areas in Beijing are under renovation for the 2008 Olympics. The Forbidden City and the Summer Palace all had sections under renovation as of the middle of March 2006. Renovations on the Temple of Heaven are completed. As a plus, ticket prices were reduced for sights under renovation. Just be aware that prior to the Olympics there may be continued renovations.

Despite rigorous preparations by the organizers in Beijing, some athletes have concerns over the food that will be available to them. Some teams are going as far as brining their own chef to the Olympics.

In 2001, Beijing beat Toronto, Paris and Istanbul in the contest to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Chinese city met the news with delirious happiness. People celebrated in the streets, and a crowd of 200,000 converged in Tiananmen Square [source: CNN]. China saw the win as an official international welcome into the developed nations' club. Winning the bid... took dedication comparable to that of an Olympic athlete in training. China, already faced with condemnation over human rights issues, had to convince the International Olympic Committee that the nation's booming capital could reduce pollution, improve its infrastructure and play host to scores of guests.

The organizing committee of next year's Olympics in Beijing says it is investigating allegations that some official merchandise for the games was made abusing workers and using child labor. An official of the committee said in Hong Kong that companies found to be violating labor rules would lose their contracts.
