Beethoven: Symphony No

Beethoven is the star, as he should be. The human cast... perform wonderfully in providing the light framework required to string Beethoven's scenes together. Charles Grodin especially shines as the dad who is, at first, not exactly enthused about getting a dog. Much less a monster dog who only drools and sheds and eats.

Despite everything, in this long, dark night of reaction, Beethoven never lost faith in the future of humanity and in the revolution. It has now become commonplace to refer to his great humanitarianism. This is correct as far as it goes but it does not go far enough. It places Beethoven on the same level as parsons, pacifists and well-meaning old ladies who dedicate their spare time to “worthy causes”. That is to say, it places a giant on the same level as a pygmy.

Now Beethoven was to be compared to his teacher, the great Haydn, who was still alive. Would he measure up? The result is one of the great cornerstones of the choral and orchestral repertoire. Not commonly performed because of its 50-minute length, Beethoven’s Mass in C will be presented in its entirety along with the master’s much-loved overture, Coriolanus.

Once the initial round of scientific testing is completed, a committee will discuss the possibility of organizing an exhibit on the Beethoven and Goethe treasures inherited by the Kaufmanns. The Beethoven part of the exhibit will explain the testing and the science, as well as the history of the fragments. The fragments will not be on exhibit until a future date. The Goethe portion of the exhibit will explore the rich connections between Romeo Seligmann and the Goethe's daughter-in-law Ottilie and her sons.

From 1792 to his death in 1827 at the age of 57 Beethoven lived in Vienna, essentially as a private person, unmarried, amid a circle of friends, independent of any kind of official position or private service. He rarely traveled, apart from summers in the countryside. In 1796 he made a trip to northern Germany, perhaps to look over the possibilities for a post; his schedule included a visit to the Berlin court of King Frederick William of Prussia, an amateur cellist, and the Op. 5 Violoncello Sonatas appear to date from this trip. Later Beethoven made several trips to Budapest and to spas in Bohemia.
