Mozart aside, Ludwig van Beethoven is the most famous classical composer of the western world. Beethoven is remembered for his powerful and stormy compositions, and for continuing to compose and conduct even after he began to go deaf at age 28. The ominous four-note beginning to his Fifth Symphony -- bom bom bom bommmmm -- is one of the most famous moments in all of music. (Beethoven supposedly described the notes as "Fate knocking at the door.") He wrote nine numbered symphonies in all: his Third Symphony ("Eroica") and Sixth Symphony ("Pastoral") are especially famous. Beethoven ... wrote the popular "Moonlight" sonata (1801).

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, composer to ever live. Most people are familiar with a few of his works, if nothing more than the beginning of the Fifth Symphony, the Finale of the Ninth Symphony and the "Moonlight" Sonata.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed thirty-two piano sonatas between the year of 1792 and 1822. It was the time when the Classic period was changing to the Romantic period. His piano sonatas show the changes of musical style in form, structure, and his life between 1792 and 1822. Beethoven had three periods in his main music career: the first Vienna period (1792-1802), the middle period (1802-1814), and the last period (after 1815). Each period shows his different musical style.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is certainly on any short list of the greatest composers. Like all supreme artists, this is not for his prodigious technical gifts alone, but for the depth of human experience and emotion that his music explores and the universality of its message. Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest masters of music, is particularly admired for his instrumental works, including symphonies, concertos, sonatas and chamber music. Beethoven has had a great influence on music. After going deaf at the age of 35 years old, Beethoven sawed the legs off of his piano and played it on the floor so he could feel its vibrations. He gave composers a new freedom to express themselves. Before his time, composers wrote for religious services, to teach and to entertain people at social functions. But people listened to Beethoven's music for its own sake.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born on 16th December 1770 in Bonn. His parents, Johann van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Keverich had married on 12th December 1767 in the church of Saint Remigio. Johann was 27 and Maria 21 at the time. The Beethoven family, partly Flemish by ancestry, a mixture of middle class and Rhineland peasantry, had two generations of musicians preceding the birth of the genius who would immortalize their name. In the genealogy of the Beethoven family, there may even be Spanish ancestors. The Low Countries had been occupied by Spain, specifically the catholic areas where the family came from.
