Beethoven: Beethoven's Father
built 655 days ago
Beethoven's parents were Johann van Beethoven (1740 in Bonn –1792) and Maria Magdalena Keverich (1744 in Ehrenbreitstein–1787). Magdalena's father Johann Heinrich Keverich had been Chef at the court of the Archbishopric of Trier at Festung Ehrenbreitstein fortress opposite to Koblenz.[2] Beethoven was, like their first child Ludwig Maria, named after his father's father Lodewijk van Beethoven (1712–1773), a musician of Roman Catholic Flemish ancestry who was at one time Kapellmeister at the court of Clemens August of Bavaria, the Prince-Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, and who married Beethoven's grandmother Maria Josepha Ball (1714–1775) in 1733.
Beethoven's father was tenor singer in the court chapel of the Prince-Archbishop of Cologne, where his grandfather, a native of Holland, had for a number of years the post of musical director. He was therefore brought up from his earliest youth in a musical atmosphere. While the father was rigorous and not always reasonable in his rule over the young genius, his mother was often over-lenient with him, a fact which may account for some of the traits of character the young man developed later on.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the second-oldest child of the court musician and tenor singer Johann van Beethoven, was born in Bonn. Ludwig's father drilled him thoroughly with the ambition of showcasing him as a child prodigy. Ludwig gave his first public performance as a pianist when he was eight years old. At the age of eleven he received the necessary systematic training in piano performance and composition from Christian Gottlob Neefe, organist and court musician in Bonn. Employed as a musician in Bonn court orchestra since 1787, Beethoven was granted a paid leave of absence in the early part of 1787 to study in Vienna under Mozart. he was soon compelled to return to Bonn... and after his mother's death had to look after the family.

Ludwig van Beethoven In 1740, Beethoven's father, Johann was born. Johann sang soprano in the electoral chapel where his father was Kapellmeister (chapel master). Johann grew up proficient enough to teach violin, piano, and voice to earn a living. Johann married Maria Magdalena in 1767 and gave birth to Ludwig Maria in 1769, who died 6 days later. On December 17, 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was born. Maria later gave birth to five other children, but only two survived, Caspar Anton Carl and Nikolaus Johann.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 17, 1770 in Bonn, in the Rhineland of Germany. He lived in Vienna from 1792 until his death. Beethoven's Father and Grandfather were court musicians. Ludwig carried on the family tradition in exemplary form, becoming one of history's greatest composers.

Ludwig van Beethoven Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany and was one of seven children in the family, four of whom died at infancy. He inherited his musical talent from his grandfather, Louis van Beethoven, who was employed at the court of the Elector of Cologne.  Louis was a capable musician and eventually became the Elector's Director of Music.  Beethoven's father, Johann, was ... employed there as a musician but had limited talent and a very aggressive personality.  Johann drank excessively, was constantly chasing after women and was very cruel to Ludwig.  He did, however, realise Ludwig's potential, but was disappointed when his son, who developed his talents slowly, did not become a child prodigy like Mozart.  It was his deeply loved mother, Maria Magdalena, who kept order within the household by attempting to control Johann's excesses.
