Bee: Honey Bee
built 282 days ago
Leaf Cutting Bee Like the European Wasp, the Honey Bee is an introduced social insect. Worker bees visit flowers in search of pollen during the summer months, and may sting if handled or caught in clothing. They are particularly attracted to clover flowers, so it is wise to be cautious if walking through clover patches. Like wasps, Honey Bees will vigorously defend their nests.

DreamWorks Animation's "Bee Movie" features the comic talents of Jerry Seinfeld and tells the story of Barry B. Benson -- a recent college graduate bee who wants more out of life than making honey. When Benson ventures out into the world and learns that humans have been stealing honey from bees for centuries, he takes his case to court, and wins. Victory is sweet until the balance of nature is upset, and Barry B. Benson must prove that even a little bee can change the world.
Bees vary tremendously in size. Here a tiny halictid bee is gathering pollen, while a giant bumblebee behind her gathers nectar from a lily. Bees are extremely important as pollinators in agriculture, especially the domesticated Western honey bee, with contract pollination having overtaken the role of honey production for beekeepers in many countries. Monoculture and pollinator decline (of many bee species) have increasingly caused honey bee keepers to become migratory so that bees can be concentrated in areas of pollination need at the appropriate season. Recently, many such migratory beekeepers have experienced substantial losses, prompting the announcement of investigation into the phenomenon, dubbed "Colony Collapse Disorder," amidst great concern over the nature and extent of the losses.
