David Beckham is a leading English footballer whose popularity extends beyond the field and into international celebrity. Beckham was already a crowd-pleasing star for Manchester United when he married Spice Girls star Victoria Adams ("Posh Spice") in July of 1999; the combination of the two heartthrobs proved irresistible to the press and public, and they became one of Britain's most famous couples. As a player Beckham is particularly known for his free kick expertise and spectacular long-range shots (including a famous goal from midfield against Wimbledon in 1996). Manchester United sold Beckham to the Spanish team Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 35 million euros (about 25 million British pounds) in June of 2003. Beckham was disqualified from the 1998 World Cup for a rough foul in England's loss to Argentina, but returned to play in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He was captain of the English national team from 2000 until 2006, when he stepped down from the role after a loss to Portugal in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Beckham is in New York for the L.A. Galaxy game against the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium on Saturday, which looks like it will be a sell out. Beckham was to be joined by Jozy Altidore, 17-year-old Red Bulls’ forward and Goal blogger, and his strike partner Juan Pablo Angel in a clinic for the FC Harlem Lions. [T]he problem Beckham has is his contract. $250 million? for that amount of money the American audience is expecting him to ’score hat-tricks every game’(that is actually a quote from a American sports writer). They believe Becks is a player of Pele proportions, which he is not.

Beckham has a hurt ankle and only played the last 20 minutes. What were you expecting? Three bicycle kick goals and a game victory? He's a big story. He's an incredible athlete. Let the man (and the sport) have a bit of publicity in this country.

David Beckham made his first Premier league appearance in 1995 while playing for Manchester United. It was Alex Ferguson that showed a lot of confidence in his younger players after losing three first team players. Alex Ferguson decided to not buy players to restock the stock but instead to go with youth. Beckham got off to a quick start by starting the season with a goal against Aston Villa in a loss. Even though the team started off slowly Manchester United won the double that year by winning the premier league and the FA cup. Beckham was a significant contributor to that FA Cup winning team.

Coming off record ratings for David Beckham's first Major League Soccer game, ESPN has added another Los Angeles Galaxy game to its schedule. Sister channel ESPN2 will air Sunday's match against Toronto FC (Aug. 5, 7:30 pm/ET). The network originally planned to air repeat episodes of The World Series of Poker.Since his July 21 MLS debut, Beckham has missed several games with an ankle injury he sustained earlier in the summer. It has not yet been determined if he will be playing against Toronto, but given that the game has been picked up by ESPN2, it seems likely he'll at least make a cameo. Recovery has "taken more time than we thought," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop told the Los Angeles Times.
