European football superstar David Beckham made a cautious debut with his new team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Saturday evening. Mike O'Sullivan reports from Los Angeles, the British midfielder played to a packed house for just 12 minutes.

The paparazzi began patrolling the Home Depot Center grounds hours before Beckham's debut last night with the Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition match against Chelsea of the English Premier League. The "paps," as they are affectionately called by a weird cultural subset that couldn't survive if their picture wasn't snapped daily, were here for the scene as much as the sport, for the footballer's wife as much as her golden-haired Adonis husband.

One aspect of the new scheme was a grandfather clause that enabled the Los Angeles Galaxy (which signed David Beckham as its DP), the Kansas City Wizards and F.C. Dallas (which signed Denilson) to retain players who were already making more than $400,000 and to not have them count as DPs for one year.
