After dropping out of high school in the mid-1980s, Beck traveled and educated himself. During this period, he developed his musical talent through the art of busking. In Germany, he spent time with his grandfather Al Hansen. The late 1980s found him in New York City, involved in the punk-influenced anti-folk music movement.

Beck Hansen was born on July 8, 1970 in Los Angeles, the son of David Campbell and Bibbe Hansen. When his parents split, he and his younger brother stayed with their mother. Beck Hansen dropped out of school at the age of 14 and drifted around for about a decade, ending up back in Los Angeles. While playing some open mic events, he got noticed by the little local label, Bong Load Custom Records. In 1993, "Loser" was released to the world in a limited pressing of 500 copies and sent out to radio DJs across the U.S. The song became quite popular, and Geffen signed Beck in November of 1993, giving him the freedom to work with independent labels and to make "uncommercial" music.

What to say about Beck Hansen that hasn't already been said? You probably already know about his unlikely rags-to-riches musical odyssey: poor kid from Pasadena with little more than guitar creates postmodern pop pastiche and becomes unofficial (and accidental) king of millennial throwaway culture. In truth though, that much-documented tumultuous upbringing, during which he was exposed to bluegrass through his musician father, hip hop on the streets of Los Angeles, and punk on the streets of New York, has obviously served as a blueprint for everything Beck has done since, helping him become one of the most singular voices in the history of American popular music.
