While she has won acclaim for her work on the musical stage, she's still best known to television viewers as Lilith Sternin, Frazier Crane's tightly wound girlfriend (and later wife) on the popular comedy Cheers. Born Beatrice Neuwirth, she was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, by her mathematician father and artist mother. Bebe began taking dance lessons at the age of five and, while a student at Princeton High School, she began appearing in local ballet productions and community theater productions. After high school, Ms. Neuwirth studied dance at New York's prestigious Juilliard School, and in 1980 she made her professional debut as Sheila, a once-famous dancer looking to make a comeback, in a touring production of the long-running musical A Chorus Line.

She began formal dance classes at the age of 5, and performed with the local ballet while she was in high school. After high school, Neuwirth attended the prestigious Julliard School of the Performing Arts (as did fellow Cheers alum Kelsey Grammer) where she studied dance. She made her professional debut in 1980, while she was still in school, when she was cast as Sheila in a traveling production of A Chorus Line. Neuwirth subsequently dropped out to pursue a career on Broadway. In 1982 she was cast in Dancin' , which was directed and choreographed by famed choreographer Bob Fosse.

Bebe Neuwirth's return to the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago is not what anyone expected—including Neuwirth herself. She was a devastatingly sexy and hilarious Velma Kelly when the show opened in 1996, staking a definitive claim to the role while picking up a Tony and pretty much every other award for Best Actress in a musical. Neuwirth stepped back into Chicago now and then while juggling other roles on stage, television, and film, but eventually her dancing career was sidelined by a problem hip. Recent surgery has restored her to fine form, eager to tackle Ann Reinking's stylish version of Bob Fosse's original choreography. On New Year's Eve, in a very Chicago "Stop the presses!" reversal, Neuwirth returned to the musical, this time as Roxie, the hapless hausfrau at the heart of the show.
