The beat generation was one of the largest cultural movements of the twentieth century. What started off as a literary phenomenon soon progressed to a life-changing attitude for thousands of people around the world. It embraced originality and individuality in the way people thought and acted. The beat generation threw out the old rules of literature, music, sex and religion, and its effects are still felt in the world today.

This is the Danish pathway to the Beat Generation that would seem to be having a renaissance - or perhaps a resurrection in the 1990s. They date back to the 1950s and are now looked upon as a major cultural - especially literary - force of that period, as well as being a part of the much broader counterculture. The truth is that they took their beginnings in the 1940s, and that the leading "members" of that group often led a precarious existence in the 50s. They couldn't always get published, they were poorly received and precious few people can actually be said to have belonged to that group. And some of those members have repeatedly rejected the actual existence of any Beat Generation.
The final blow to the popular Beat movement (though it goes on even today in some groups) was Vietnam and the sudden lack of media acknowledgement for people of the Beat Generation. The media latched on to the outspoken anti-war hippies during Vietnam, and Beats slowly disappeared beneath their more 'up-to-date' anti-establishment counterparts.
