Ashamed of his new appearance, the Beast conceals himself inside his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose the Enchantress had offered was an enchanted one, which would bloom until his twenty-first birthday. However, the petals of the rose would fall off in due course as it wilted and died. Should he learn to love a woman and earn her love in return before the last petal of the rose fell off, the enchantment would be broken, and he and his servants would regain human form. If he was not able to love before this time, the transformation would be permanent. It is from the terms of the spell that we are able to determine the Prince's age at the time of the enchantment; he must learn to love another before he turns twenty-one, and in the song "Be Our Guest," the character Lumiere notes that the spell has been in existence for ten years ("Ten years we've been rusting,| Needing so much more than dusting").

The rose is a common element in the Beauty and the Beast tales. Beauty usually requests a rose from her father, hoping to ask for a gift he can afford whatever his success in reviving his business. Ironically, Beauty's request for the rose will be the most dangerous and costly gift the father tries to produce.
