Bayer Leverkusen were aiming for a good start in the UEFA Cup on Thursday when they face Uniao Leiria in the first round. Last season, Bayer reached the quarter-finals and, although they are setting their sights lower initially, the second round is a necessity. "We must get into the group stage," said director of sport Rudi Voller. "We hope to spend the winter still in the competition and then we will see from round to round." Having already gone out of the German Cup, the UEFA Cup may provide the club's best chance of silverware this season, and coach Michael Skibbe is aware of its importance. "European games are important for this club and our young team," he said.
While the team came closest to winning the Bundesliga in the late-90s, it was the decade of football prior to this period that saw Bayer Leverkusen achieve its greatest accomplishments. The team walked away with the UEFA Cup in 1988 and the German Cup in 1993. Again, these accolades might not seem like much when compared to bigger football franchises, but Bayer Leverkusen has had its share of success and has been of the consistently better teams in the German Bundesliga in recent history. They are regular mainstays in UEFA competitions and have not faced relegation in quite some time.
Unfortunately, Bayer Leverkusen is perceived by some to have an ongoing image problem of a different sort. Although they are a financially healthy club with a stable of strong players, many fans of the old school clubs denounce Bayer Leverkusen as a "plastic club", without traditions or a committed fan base, existing solely as a creature of their rich pharmaceutical company sponsor. This is not unknown in football and other famous clubs such as Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Parma, or Sochaux share a similar reputation. But in Leverkusen their starts the "ultra-culture" in Germany, with the first "ultra"-fanclub called "Mad-Boyz-Leverkusen", which was founded in 1989.
