Bauhaus 1919-1933 is at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima). This is the first Bauhaus exhibition in Britain since the Royal Academy's show in 1968, dedicated to Walter Gropius, then an Honorary Royal Academician who lived in England between leaving Germany and settling in the USA. The mima exhibition focuses on the ethos of the Bauhaus through an exhibition of paintings, drawings, furniture and design. A series of photographs of original Bauhaus architecture by Hans Engels is included in the show.

Marcel Breuer, whose Wassily Chair is one of the famous examples of the Bauhaus furniture, was in charge of the carpentry workshop. Breuer said, that he first got the idea for using tubular steel in furniture design from his beloved Adler bicycle, whose strength and lightness impressed him. The Wassily Chair, named after the painter Wassily Kandinsky, for whose quarters in Dessau it was originally designed, is a reworking of the traditional club chair. It reveals the influence of the Dutch modernist Gerrit Rietveld, in its arrangements of bisecting horizontal and vertical planes.

Bauhaus had the last really big commercial success in summer 1983 with the LP “Burning from the inside”, which was a melancholic, dark, mysterious Lyric-picture-collage. 1982 Bauhaus acted in a short scene of the movie “The Hunger”, which was a movie about Vampires, in which the main characters got acted by David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. After a Tour in Japan in summer 1983 the single members of the band agreed that they would split. But they all stayed in contact with each other and they released a few Samplers, which reached lower ranges in the charts.

Ash, along with Bauhaus roadie Glenn Campling, originally began Tones on Tail as a side project in 1981. When Bauhaus split, Kevin Haskins signed on. They released several U.K. EPs and singles plus an album, all of which have been compiled on several U.S. releases. After a 1984 American tour, Ash and Haskins dissolved the band. David J joined the Jazz Butcher, but left after the 1984 album A Scandal in Bohemia. He ... released a string of U.K. solo albums in the early to mid-’80s. With their careers stalled, the members of Bauhaus planned to reunite in 1985.

Bauhaus first broke up in 1983. Peter Murphy began a solo career while the other members continued as Tones on Tail, and later, Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland. The band reunited for a 1998 tour, and on a more permanent basis in 2005. The group announced plans to disband again after the release of their final album Go Away White (2008).
