Battleship: World War Ii
built 622 days ago
With the Washington Naval Treaty, the navies of the world scaled back on their battleship arms race, with numerous ships on all sides scrapped or repurposed. With an extension, that treaty lasted until 1936, when the major navies of the world began a new build-up. Famous ships like Bismarck, Missouri, and the Japanese Yamato were all launched within the next few years in preparation for the coming of World War II.

Le Napoléon (1850), the first steam battleship German battleships—obsolete pre-dreadnoughts—fired the first shots of World War II with the bombardment of the Polish garrison at Westerplatte;[40] and the final surrender of the Japanese Empire took place aboard a United States Navy battleship, the USS Missouri. Between the two events, it became clear that battleships were now essentially auxiliary craft, and aircraft carriers were the new principal ships of the fleet.
World War II: the start of the Battle of the River Plate when British warships attack the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee. The battle finishes when the captain of the Graf Spee scuttles his ship at the entrance to Montivideo harbour.
Pressure increased on San Francisco officials Friday to decide whether they want the World War II battleship Iowa after two key federal lawmakers agreed to let any California community bid for the vessel. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and Rep. Richard Pombo, who had been offering dueling proposals on the Iowa's future, agreed that the ship should be transferred to California for permanent donation status and that any city in the state could bid for it.

Speaking of giant models, Maine-resident William Terra has spent 6 years completing this gigantic 1:20-scale model of a World War II German Panzerschiff, the Deutschland-class battleship Admiral Graf Spee. The 30-feet long, 700-pound model is built like a canoe and is capable of carrying two people on board.
