Battleship: Battleships

Battleship Bred in Kentucky by Walter J. Salmon Sr. at his Mereworth Farm, Battleship raced for his breeder through his three-year-old campaign. He was a winner at two, and victorious in the James Rowe Memorial Handicap (7f. Bowie) early in his three-year-old year. A starting gate injury put him out of commission until the next year, when he won the Great Lakes Handicap (8.5f. Hawthorne).

On several occasions, battleships were support ships in carrier battle groups, or led their own battle groups in a battleship battle group. These were modernized to carry Tomahawk missiles, with New Jersey seeing action bombarding Lebanon, while Missouri and Wisconsin fired their 16inch (406mm) guns at land targets and launched missiles in the Gulf War of 1991. Wisconsin served as the TLAM strike commander for the Persian Gulf, directing the sequence of launches that marked the opening of Operation Desert Storm and firing a total of 24 TLAMs during the first two days of the campaign. This will most likely be the last combat action ever by a battleship. The primary threat to the battleships were Iraqi shore based surface-to-surface missiles; Missouri was targeted by two Iraqi Silkworm missiles, with one missing and another being intercepted by the British destroyer HMS Gloucester.

For use in an upcoming TV documentary, a 1/350 scale recreation of the monstrous battleship Yamato is now underway. Armed with plastic board and a whole lot of putty, the capable modeling hands at Tamiya rolled up their sleeves for big-scale modeling action.

Battleship design changed... with the launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906. Dreadnought had ten identical big guns mounted in turrets, giving it far more firepower than anything else afloat. It was so revolutionary that battleships built before it were all classed as "pre-Dreadnought battleships," and those after as "post-Dreadnought battleships," or simply "dreadnoughts."

Erich Friedman's interesting site features many of his original puzzles, including his Battleship puzzles. There are five 3 x 1 ships hidden in a 5x5 grid, each ship with a different number from 1 to 5. The numbers at the sides of the square give the sum of the numbers on all the ships in that row or column. Each puzzle has a unique solution. Can you find it?
