Battlefield: 1942 Battlefield 1942 is every World War II history buff's dream. During the game you can play the role of one of five classes of soldier, drive more than 35 vehicles and use authentic looking and sounding weapons.
At a Glance: "Battlefield 1942" is a tactical first-person shooter that throws the action of a game like Tribes into the setting of the Second World War. Historical inaccuracies aside, the game attempts to capture the feel if not the fact behind a number of important battles. You can fly planes, drive tanks, and fire artillery from war ships, among many other vehicles and emplacements. For a game that gets so much so right, it's disappointing to find out the things that the developer got horribly wrong. The game is full of technical errors and oversights and since it was published by Electronic Arts you can expect about as much support on these issues as would be offered by a one-legged chair made out of glued-together light bulbs.
Battlefield 1942 Screenshots Gallery Aimed squarely at the growing online-gaming market, Electronic Arts' latest PC action-strategy title Battlefield 1942 is a tense, involving game that wisely doesn't totally ignore the single player. Set in the midst of the Second World War, the action plays out as a satisfying hybrid of the tactical, slow build-up of Ghost Recon, mixed in with the more action-based Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Kicking off with an overall map of the area, each game requires some strategic planning before you get down to business, and with 35 vehicles on offer, as well as five classes of character to step into the shoes of, there's much to consider. To the developers' credit, it's quite an easy game to get to grips with, and it positively reeks of polish. The stylised graphics and sound convey the action well, and do contribute to the nice, slow build-up of tension before the skirmishes kick off. Even though you only control one character at a time, you are left feeling part of a team fighting against a common enemy.

In Battlefield 1942, players are dropped into the middle of a World War II battlefield and forced to find a path to victory both for them and for the soldiers on their side. While the game has a single player component, it's the multiplayer mode that's the bigger focus as 64 players can shoot it out in a variety of WWII theaters. The action takes place on the land, in the air and on the sea. While your main means of transportation is the trusty boot, there are ... 32 controllable vehicles in the game that run the gamut from jeeps to trucks, planes to boats. Includes The Road to Rome expansion pack.
