Few historians would disagree with the inclusion of the Battle of Waterloo on a list of the world’s most decisive battles. The engagement has been subject of scores upon scores of volumes, which explore all aspects of the battle, the commanders, and the men in the ranks. Even author of The Waterloo Companion Mark Adkin, in his introduction, queries, "So, why another book (about Waterloo)?"

There are MacNeils present on the muster rolls from the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Neil Og MacNeil, the 26th chief, fought with Robert the Bruce against Edward II, defeating the British at Stirling. For his efforts, Neil Og was rewarded with lands in Kintyre, Scotland.

This family-run hotel became a coaching inn soon after the famous battle of Waterloo. Prior to then it was known as Sough Farm due to the nearby sough, or drainage tunnel, that drained local lead mines and provided water to this limestone terrain.
