The original Battle Chess added a new twist to the game of chess by adding movement, sound, and a sense of humor to the game's medieval characters. Instead of simply sliding from square to square as in other computer chess games, the knights, bishops, rooks, and other pieces on the Battle Chess board actually walk to their new squares. Best of all, when one piece captures another, the square isn't surrendered peacefully but is reluctantly vacated after a mini-battle that can include anything from a sword fight to histrionic spellcasting.

In the late 80’s, Interplay’s Battle Chess reinvented the computer chess genre. In Battle Chess, each chess piece was portrayed by a character on a three dimensional chessboard. The game followed the same rules as the classic board game – the only difference being when one piece captured another, it was visually portrayed on screen through light-hearted animations. Characters clobbered one another in humorous ways throughout the game, and the game’s sense of humor along with its stunning graphics and animation launched an entire wave of similarly styled chess games.

With Battle Chess, Interplay wanted to make chess accessible for a broader audience and they did that with a fair amount of success. The addition of the fighting-scenes makes this a very funny chess game, which will appeal to many. Without the animation, there’s still a pretty good chess-game here, with some good options and quite a lot of difficulty-levels. Unfortunately, the humour and originality of Battle Chess is let down by very long loading times (and disk-swapping in places), which can be taken at first, but which become irritating in the long run.

Over a period of time Battle Chess spawned imitators such as Star Wars Chess and Terminator 2 Chess Wars. Interplay won "Best Graphics Achievement In A Non-Graphics Product" from Software Publishers Association (later renamed to Software and Information Industry Association) for their efforts.[7]
