Battle Chess: Pieces
built 643 days ago
Battle Chess box cover Battle Chess is a computer game version of chess in which the chess pieces come to life and battle one another when capturing. The game itself was inspired by the 3D chess sequences from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Futureworld.
If you're familiar with classic chess, you'll be right at home in Battle Chess. The primary graphic innovatio is obvious, with each piece a futuristic humanoid of some sort. These pieces possess their own unique characteristics: rough-and-tumble queens that always mean business, leechlike pawns that squish around the board, self-assured bishops that practice a science so advanced it seems magical. When the pieces clash, a combat sequence is certain to follow, so keep your eyes on the screen. In Battle Chess 4000 these combat sequences run on the hilarious side. The rook--which transforms from a tiny, inert form into a towering, ambling robot--seems to have the greatest sense of humor.
… there’s one big problem with Battle Chess on the C64- it's too damn slow! Every move which is made has to be loaded and it takes some considerable time before the action you ordered is performed on-screen. The battles between the chess-pieces take even longer to load, so the fun of watching the nice fighting-scenes, becomes rather irritating pretty fast. Add to that, when you’ve seen all the different battles between all the different characters, seeing them a second or a third time is less fun, so the fights tend to get pretty tedious. The diehard chess-fan can always switch the 3D-battle-view to the slightly faster 2D-view which ... gives a better overview of the game, although quite a lot of disk-swapping is necessary for this.

Do you remember Battle Chess, a famous chess program from MS-DOS era in which two characters would have an animated battle when a player captured a piece? In LoveChess, \"make love, not war\" is the rule when the chess pieces meet each other.

There actually is an old computer game called Battle Chess 3D. Mad fun. Its just regular chess except the pieces are creatures and people and when they kill each other, they actually do. Its quite comical and fun to play.

The classic game comes to the phone as two medieval armies take on one-another on a 3D battlefield that is the chess board! Play as any one of the two armies and watch your pieces as they move animatedly about the board. Enjoy cool 3D fight sequences as pieces face off against one-another in a battle to the death! Watch pawns and knights slash it out while more powerful pieces such as the queen and bishop conjure up magic to dispose of their foes.
