Battle Chess: Pieces

The graphics in Battle Chess are pretty good, but not superb. The characters are well defined and are instantly recognizable from a glance, but because the characters are the same colour as the squares of the board (red and blue), they sometimes tend to get a little bit obscure. Also the blockiness causes things to get a bit hard to see, especially when there are a couple of chess-pieces of the same colour near each other.

Chess is actually a game of battle, with the worth of pieces on the board equivalent to the worth of their counterparts in real life. Perhaps the material used for carving or casting the pieces has changed, but it remains a game of battle and strategy. Not much else has changed in this board game until now! Battle Chess from MacPlay adds an amusing addition to the game. Opposing pieces actually come to life and do battle. Watch a queen blast an opposing piece with a bolt of lightning, or a pawn stab another.

Battle chess is basically a chess game with animations. You have a variety of difficulty levels depending on how good you are at chess and how much you would like to be challenged. The game ... contains a number of set scenarios to test your ability – the pieces are set and you must do your best from that point on or merely select the best move for that particular situation. The controls for moving the pieces are simple enough but the controls required to change the difficulty levels and to set up specific scenarios can be confusing.
A second problem Star Wars Chess seems to have inherited from Battle Chess is painfully slow load times. When one piece takes another, first the animation of one piece walking is loaded and displayed, then the animated fight scene must be loaded and displayed, and finally the AI must make its next move. (Also worth noting is that each “capture” only has one animation, taking the cutesy animations from entertaining to boring in light speed.) Chess isn’t known for being a particularly fast-paced game, but Star Wars Chess moves like space-molasses, especially while waiting for the computer to move.

Battle Chess is exactly like regular chess, except pieces aren't "taken," they're killed in comical animated sequences. Unfortunately, these battle scenes drastically slow down the game and don't affect the outcome. The only saving grace is a faster 2D mode without the useless animation. ~ Skyler Miller, All Game Guide

Hailed as the definitive Chess simulation for the formation, Konami's Chess Battle ... includes a number of new gameplay modes and wireless connectivity, allowing users to play each other with ease. The classic game is also brought to life with superb 3D visuals, with extensive animated battle sequences used to show as key pieces are taken, Queens are lost and the King is finally cornered.
