Batman was created by Bob Kane in 1939 as a comic book hero. During his long career he was featured in the Superman radio series and in two movie serials produced during World War II. In 1966 the ABC network decided to produce the first Batman television series and it became an immediate hit. Initially, the show aired twice a week. On Wednesdays, Batman and his sidekick Robin would confront one of their archenemies and would end the episode in horrible danger, only to save themselves at the beginning of the next episode on Thursdays. These cliffhangers closely followed the tradition created by Kane in the comic books.

Batman was filmed at Pinewood Studios from October 1988 to January 1989. Anton Furst was given a $5.5 million budget for the production design and construction process. Burton opted not to film at Warner Brothers' studios in California, as he wanted to film in England to escape American press.[1] Keaton quoted, "When you're overseas, you can concentrate on making the movie and not think about the external things. That turned out to be a blessing."[27] Production was highly secretive. The unit publicist was offered and refused £10,000 for the first pictures of Nicholson as The Joker. The police were later called in when two reels of footage (about 20 minutes worth) were copied in an attempt to make a pirate video.[2] Nicholson was very supportive of Burton, going as far as yelling at Jon Peters and Peter Guber (as well as various Warner Brothers executives) simply in favor of the director.[13]
Bruce Wayne (Batman) prays From a psychological perspective, the traditional literary Catholic psyche provides a ready explanation for who Batman is on the inside. Privileged Episcopalianism, one of America's most liberal denominations, deeply entrenched within and ... defined by normative mainstream American culture, seems as wholly at odds with Batman's persona as it is in keeping with Bruce Wayne's.
