Batman Begins The superhero Batman was the brainchild of cartoonist Bob Kane. The character first appeared in Detective Comics in 1939, and was such a hit that Batman comics remained in print in one form or another into the 21st century. Batman is the "caped crusader," the crimefighting alter-ego of millionaire Bruce Wayne. Wayne inherited a fortune as a boy after his parents were killed by robbers; when Wayne grew up he dedicated himself to fighting crime and chose the guise of a bat in order to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. (Unlike Superman and Spider-Man, Batman is a human with no supernatural powers.) Batman lives in Gotham City and operates out of his secret crime laboratory, the Bat Cave. He battles exotic supervillains including the Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman and the Penguin, and is often aided by a sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder.

Batman (originally referred to as [T]he Bat-Man and still sometimes as the Batman) is a DC Comics fictional character and superhero who first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. He has since become, along with Superman and Spider-Man, one of the world's most recognized superheroes.[1] Batman was co-created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, although only Kane receives official credit for the character. Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection, don a costume, and fight crime. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superhuman powers or abilities; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, technology, and physical prowess in his war on crime.
Batman has a multitude of vehicles for his one man war on crime. His primary vehicle, the Batmobile is a modified jet aircraft that has an armored car built around it. It is capable of speeds of 200+ miles per hour, 300+ with an afterburner. Batman ... has a variety of terrain vehicles, gliders, small aircraft and watercraft as well, such as speedboats and submersibles for covert operations. He also keeps a modified stealth aircraft that he uses in conjuction with the Justice League. It was destroyed recently in conflict with the Martians but will probably be replace soon with something more advanced. All of Batman's vehicles are resistant to small arms fire and designed to be a durable and maintenance free as possible.
The debut of the Batman television series in 1966 had a profound influence on the character. The success of the series increased sales throughout the comic book industry, and Batman reached a circulation of close to 900,000 copies.[26] Elements such as the character of Batgirl and the show's campy nature were introduced into the comics; the series ... initiated the return of Alfred. Although both the comics and TV show were successful for a time, the camp approach eventually wore thin and the show was canceled in 1968. In the aftermath the Batman comics themselves lost popularity once again. As Julius Schwartz noted, "When the television show was a success, I was asked to be campy, and of course when the show faded, so did the comic books."[27]

The Golden Age Batman first appears in Detective Comics #27, May 1939. Batman's origin is first presented in Detective Comics #33 in November 1939, and is later fleshed out in Batman #47, the 1985 four-issue limited series America vs. the Justice Society and 1986's Secret Origins (Vol. 2) #6. As these comics state, Bruce Wayne is born in the 1910s to Dr. Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha, two very wealthy and charitable Gotham City socialites. The 1989 film. Batman made his debut in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939), and Batman#1 followed in Spring 1940. Along the way Batman acquired an origin story that may have been tossed off as an afterthought but would become part of the Batman legend decades later. The premise was simple. Young Bruce Wayne watched his wealthy parents murdered by a thug, and grew up training his mind and body for a career fighting crime. He would soon team up with Robin, who was an orphaned boy named Dick Grayson, the first superhero kid sidekick. Among the villains he encountered were some of the most colorful in comics: The Joker, Catwoman, The Penguin, and Two-Face.
