Batman Returns is the 1992 sequel to the 1989 film Batman. Tim Burton returned as director with Daniel Waters and Sam Hamm as screenwriters. Michael Keaton reprised his role as Batman and a new villain in the form of Penguin was played by Danny DeVito. Also joining the cast as Catwoman was Michelle Pfeiffer. Batman Returns, though a financial success, did not live up to the success of its predecessor. Burton's style was blamed for the failure and he was replaced by Joel Schumacher who directed Batman Forever and its follow ups.

[D]espite the backlash, Batman Returns is a real treat for Burton fans. It's a far more personal movie than the original and a rare example of a blockbuster which is actually an art film. The visuals and score are even more stunning than in the first film, and the characters and performances have far more depth. Burton brilliantly uses the three villains to emphasise different aspects of Batman's psychology. This is best illustrated by Catwoman (an unforgettable performance by Michelle Pfeiffer) who, aside from being a far more fascinating romantic interest than Vicki Vale... shows how close Batman is to going over the edge in his vigilante escapades.

Batman Returns has a great story; ... it is lost in all the stunts and special effects tossed at the viewer. While an evil circus gang is terrorizing Gotham, Businessman Max Schreck is planning on building a power plant in Gotham city However, he can't get support from the mayor and Bruce Wayne who know there is no need for a power plant. Schreck attempts to gain the political power he needs to get the plant built by holding a recall election. Schreck recruits Oswald Cobblepot to run for mayor using pity for the misshapen penguin man to garner support for his candidate. However, Batman is aware of Schreck's scheme and he also knows that Cobblepot is the leader of the circus gang which has been terrorizing Gotham city. Also aware of Schreck's evil scheme is his shy secretary Selina Kyle.

Batman Returns has some of the best visual eye-candy on display. Most of the sequences are super memorable and, even though they look like tricks, "well-done" is the middle name. For instance, there is one shot where Batman is tracking down the Penguin's lair in the sewers, and, he does a twist in the air, with the water splashing in the air, with his Batmarine. Wow!

Kyle's Review: On the surface, Batman Returns is more of a true comic book superhero adaptation than Batman. Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) is still the ultra-brooding Batman, protector of Gotham City. When he is called into action by the batsignal, he finds he now has a cadre of villains to deal with. Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito), the Penguin to his friends, has just emerged from his childhood home in the Gotham sewers with a deadly scheme and a gang of circus goons under his control. He soon joins forces with literally power-hungry Max Schreck (Christopher Walken), and they start trying to take over Gotham politically as well. Throw in the seductive but murderous quasi-feminist-in-skintight-latex Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Batman has his hands full.

Batman Returns has a surprinsingly much more darker plot in tone that it's prodecessor. The highly rich Cobbleplots have just given birth to a deformed son, and drop him down the sewers and abandon him. The deformed son, who is later called Oswald Cobblepot in the movie, soon manages to find a place like home with a couple of Emperor Penguins from the zoo. A local business tycoon named Max Shreck says a speech at Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. "The Red Triangle Gang", which is The Penguin's (a.k.a: Oswald Cobblepot) clown army, shoot and attack the streets of Gotham City. It's up to Batman to restore order.
