According to conventional wisdom, 1992’s Batman Returns was a badly flawed film. The existence of 1997’s Batman and Robin meant that it wouldn’t be seen as the worst of the four, but most fans seem to prefer 1989’s Batman and 1995’s Batman Forever.

The new Anthology DVD set includes the first four Batman films: Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin. Each comes in a two-disc pack (that's eight discs total), with commentary tracks, making-of featurettes, music videos, and deleted scenes (for Forever and Robin). Extra points for an impressive box design.

Strick claims that when he was hired to rewrite Batman Returns (called Batman II at the time), he was asked to focus on "Penguin's lack of a master plan." Warner Brothers presented him with the usual ideas that consisted with warming Gotham City, freezing Gotham City, and others. The idea of freezing Gotham made its way into Batman & Robin. As Strick was reading Waters' script, he was impressed with "the Moses parallel" with infant Oswald Cobblepot being bundled in a basket and thrown in a river. Strick came up with the Penguin trying to kill the firstborn sons of Gotham to which both Warner Brothers and Tim Burton loved very much, but Strick claims the toy manufactures were disappointed.[5]
