Batman Forever is a 1995 superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Batman. It is the third film in the Batman film franchise and the first one directed by Joel Schumacher, who replaced Tim Burton, the director of the first two films in the franchise, Batman and Batman Returns. It is ... the first and only film in the franchise to star Val Kilmer as Batman, who replaced Michael Keaton from the first two films. The film also marked the series debut of Robin. The film's cast included Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Chris O'Donnell, Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar. However, Michael Gough, who featured in the first two films, returned to reprise the character Alfred in this film.
On its surface, Batman Forever is the traditional studio-assembled soundtrack, bringing together heavy hitters (U2, the Offspring, Brandy, Method Man) with cult favorites (PJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Nick Cave) that have little connection. However, the record turns the formula on its ear, creating a dark, hypnotic mood that doesn't let up until the end of the album. It's the first half of the soundtrack that is the most impressive. Beginning with the club-ready T. Rex riffs of U2's Nellee Hooper-produced "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kill Me, Kiss Me" and segueing immediately into the loose, dirty blues stomp of PJ Harvey's "One Time Too Many" and the seductive pulse of Brandy, the album draws connections between artists that don't seem to have anything to do with each other. What ties nearly everything together is their underlying dark rhythmic pulse -- each song has a vague menace that is ... sexual. With the notable exceptions of the Offspring, Michael Hutchence, and the Flaming Lips -- whose songs are used to deflate the mood -- Batman Forever is a surprisingly effective, atmospheric record; although only three of the songs are featured prominently in the film, it's even better than the movie.
To successfully navigate the world of Batman Forever, all a player has to do is simply pick Robin and start doing fireball motions while hammering the kick button. This sends Robin into a kick and flip frenzy, thrashing anything in his path. Normal enemies die in a few hits, while bosses endure 15 to 20 seconds of relentless punishment from the Boy Wonder's foot before giving up the ghost. Players who can keep this up for the duration of the game, without becoming bored out of their minds, will find that besting this game is only a couple of sore thumbs away.
Batman Forever ... introduced the character of Batman's sidekick, Robin. In the dark, sophisticated days of grim-and-gritty Batman, many believed Robin had no place. He was a colorful throwback to the sillier 1960s Batman. That image changed once audiences saw Chris O'Donnell as a buffed-up, buzz-cut Boy Wonder who rode motorcycles and talked back to Batman. The reinterpretation of Robin as a tough, rebellious teen worked well -- the character was so popular that the next Batman sequel would be titled Batman and Robin. Unfortunately, O'Donnell's performance in that movie would be so one-note that Robin came across as a whiney, ungrateful brat.

Batman Forever was given a "bare bones" DVD release when the medium was introduced in 1997-1998. However, in 2005, the newest feature film, Batman Begins, incited Warner Bros. to release a Two-Disc Special Edition set of all four Burton-Schumacher films in Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997. This included 14 of the 30 minutes of deleted scenes known to exist. The Region 2 DVD restores more than a minute of cut footage. Previous cuts included headbutts and various close ups of Two-Face.
