Batman: Superman Family

Batman is a fictional comic book superhero character owned by DC Comics. After Superman’s successful launch in 1938, publishers were on the lookout for similar properties, yet Batman had distinct differences from his predecessor, and those may have helped to account for his remarkable popularity. Batman might have dressed like a super hero, but he was really a throwback to pulp characters like The Shadow and Doc Savage, mere mortals who had no fantastic powers, but relied on cunning and courage to defeat the forces of evil. Finger and Kane clearly used The Shadow as inspiration for the character, for both mysterious hero characters had much in common. Both characters took refuge in the identity of wealthy socialites who were personal friends of the local police commissioner. The first Batman stories were clearly derivitive of this format.

Batman was the result of a creative collaboration between artist Bob Kane, and writer Bill Finger. Kane (1915-1998) entered the comic book world at a time when the success of such series as Superman, cranked up the demand for more super-heroes. Kane tinkered with a number of ideas, first creating a "Bird-Man", and finally handing over a selection of characters that included Batman. His concept was an amalgam of his own genius, based on the dashing Zorro as played by Douglas Fairbanks, and The Bat, a 1926 film about a bat-costumed hero.

Batman would later find himself in Metropolis, having followed the Joker to the city. While his long-time nemesis struck a deal with Lex Luthor, Batman would find himself working with Superman to thwart the plot. After foiling the Joker's plans to kill the Man of Steel and destroy Metropolis, he would return to the city a couple of times to stop villains from his own rogue's gallery. He would ... form an unlikely partnership with the young Static when another case brought the heroes into one another's home city. While these two partnerships did not usually start off well, Batman would eventually learn to respect their abilities and would trust both of them with his secret identity.

Batman meets and regularly works with other heroes, most notably Superman, whom he began regularly working alongside in a series of team-ups in World's Finest Comics, starting in 1954 and continuing through 1986. Batman and Superman are usually shown as close friends. Batman becomes a founding member of the Justice League of America, appearing in its first story in 1960's Brave and the Bold #28. In the 1970s and 1980s, Brave and the Bold became a Batman title, in which Batman teams up with a different DC Universe superhero each month.

The first Batman story, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate," was published in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939). Finger said, "Batman was originally written in the style of the pulps"[7] and this influence was evident with Batman showing little remorse over killing or maiming criminals and was not above using firearms. The Batman strips were a breakout hit, with sales on Detective Comics soaring to the point that the character was given his own title in 1940. By that time, National was the top-selling and most influential publisher in the industry; Batman and National's other major hero Superman were the cornerstones of the company's success.[8] The two characters were featured side-by-side as the stars of World's Finest Comics, which was originally titled World's Best Comics when it debuted in fall 1940. Creators including Jerry Robinson and Dick Sprang ... worked on the strips during this period.

In relation to other heroes one year after the Infinite Crisis, Batman helped create Wonder Woman's new identity, Diana Prince, and has begun screening other heroes for candidacy in the new Justice League of America along with Superman and Wonder Woman. Recently in Justice League of America #2, Superman and Wonder Woman privately conversed while Batman took a call from Commissioner Gordon and voted between the two of them whether Batman himself should be included in the new League. Their explanations and voting results have not been given, as the story is currently ongoing.
