A number of Batman playsets and vehicles were produced in other formats by Mego. Of particular note would be the Super Softies , Bend N Flex and Comic Action Heroes but if it was a Superhero item made by Mego, Batman was there.

Batman's earliest uniform was little more than a skin tight, candy-colored leotard which left little to the imagination. Instead of a frilly tutu, there was a utility belt. This ensemble was further complimented by long, sweeping cloakery and a bulging codpiece. Yes, the costuming was all very dandy, and it further cemented an unspoken connection between fruity drama-queen acrobatics and lead actor Adam West's propensity for high camp. Batman the comic, Batman the television program, Batman the animated cartoon and Batman the major motion picture series all cheerfully subscribe to characteristics attributed to male homosexual culture across the globe.

Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee began a 12-issue run on Batman in 2003. Lee's first regular comic book work in nearly a decade, and the series became #1 on the Diamond Comics sales chart for the first time since Batman #500 (1993). The "Batman: Hush" storyline introduces Tommy Elliot, a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's, who had signficant influence on him during his youth. As Hush, Elliot attacks Batman by coordinating many of the hero's enemies, and a large number of them appear, including the Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and the Riddler. Batman reveals his identity to Catwoman and the two became romantically involved for a brief time, until Batman's growing sense of distrust ended their relationship.

Since that time, there have been three other live-action Batman films, ranging in tone from dark and scary to campy and full of one-liners, with another yet in the works. Batman has ... come to television screens in animated series, and of course, still appears regularly in comic books.

At once whimsical and somber -- and, above all, dark -- Batman remains one of the better adaptations of a comic book character to the screen, and certainly one of the most stylized. This is not your father's Batman, and, given its relentless grimness, it perhaps shouldn't be your kids' either, if they are very young.
