   Basketball, netball, dodgeball, volleyball, and lacrosse are the only ball games which have been identified as being invented by North Americans. Other ball games, such as baseball and Canadian football, have Commonwealth of Nations, European, Asian or African connections. Although there is no direct evidence as yet that the idea of basketball came from the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame, knowledge of that game had been available for at least 50 years prior to Naismith's creation in the writings of John Lloyd Stephens and Alexander von Humboldt. Stephen's works especially, which included drawings by Frederick Catherwood, were available at most educational institutions in the 19th century and ... had wide popular circulation.

3. College Basketball -- March Madness
   ATLANTA, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- College basketball fans can vote for Kansas senior forward Wayne Simien for the recipient of the Naismith Trophy presented by Cingular Wireless, given annually to the men's and women's players of the year in college basketball. Simien, Utah center Andrew Bogut, Wake Forest guard Chris Paul, and Duke guard J.J. Redick were announced as the four men's finalists for the Trophy by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Sunday.
4. High School Basketball -- Colleges
   East Hall High School principal Mike Gillum has announced he is retiring after 32 years in the Hall County school system. ...A native of South Point, Ohio, Gillum graduated from Piedmont College in Demorest in 1974 and earned his master's degree in education from North Georgia College in Dahlonega in 1976. 5. College Basketball -- Games
   The National Association of Basketball Coaches (located in Kansas City, MO) was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary University of Kansas basketball coach. Formation of the NABC began as an emergency measure for the presentation of a united opinion the Joint Basketball Rules Committee, then the central governing authority of the game, announced without notice that it had adopted a change in the rules, which virtually eliminated the dribble. Allen, a student of basketball founder James Naismith, organized coaches to take a stand in a nationwide protest, which successfully postponed the adoption of the rule change for one year. It is worthy to note that the dribble still is part of the game of basketball. This marked the beginning of this collective group of coaches to serve as Guardians of the Game.
6. College Basketball -- Teams
   [One] memorable event for African-Americans in college basketball came three years later in the 1966 NCAA championship game, in which Texas Western College (now University of Texas at El Paso) coach Don Haskins started five African-American players. The Miners beat favorite Kentucky 72-65 to win the 1966 NCAA title. The team's victory inspired the 2006 movie Glory Road.
7. High School Basketball -- Saturday
   The Rosamond High School JV girls took 2nd place at the Cerro Coso tournament, held at Cerro Coso community college on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday the girls played seven back to back games and ended up in the bracket which would play for 1st or 2nd place. The girls played well and earned the 2nd place trophy.    Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete to have ever picked up a basketball. Yet, there are many Boston fans who claim that Larry Bird is a better athlete than Jordan. Who's right? Here's an opinion.
9. High School Basketball -- State University
   Indianapolis Boys high school basketball has provided students, parents, school faculty, and members of community so many fond memories over the years. The schools within Marion County have produced seven of the past ten state champions. There is so much history of basketball in Indianapolis that occurred prior to the past decade. Much of the information is found across various forms of media such as newspapers, yearbooks, annual publications, reference books, and organizations.
10. Clifford Roberts -- Masters Tournament
    Charles Coody beat Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller by two strokes, but bigger news was made by Clifford Roberts, who for the first time responded to questions about the lack of any black players. Rose Elder then wrote the tournament's chairman: "You stated, 'blacks often furnish the greatest of athletes in football, baseball, basketball.... there are potential Willie Mays golfers available. Masters prize money should not be official if there are restrictions."
