Bart Bryant: Pga Tour
built 216 days ago
The 36-hole totals of 130 posted by both Retief Goosen and Bart Bryant in 2005 were the lowest first 36-hole totals in TOUR Championship history. The previous low was 131 by Tom Watson at the inaugural TOUR Championship in 1987. The previous low 36-hole total at East Lake Golf Club was a 7-under-par 133 by Jay Haas in 2004.
The 42-year old Bryant was the only man without a bogey as he navigated the fairways and greens on his way to a record round. It has been a dream season for the veteran golfer, who has battled a shaky confidence through his tumultuous professional career. Up until this season, Bryant had never finished in the top-80 of the PGA money list. Coming into Thursday's round, he was 22 nd and had earned more than $2 million.
The fall of 2004 was not a delight for Bart alone. Yes, Brad shared Bart's joy in that win at La Cantera, but he had work of his own to do. In mid-December, Brad would turn 50, making him eligible for the Champions Tour. First... he would have to get through perhaps the toughest of all qualifying tournaments—92 players for seven exempt cards.
"I think it was the fear of just not being able to finish it off," said Bryant, whose best PGA outcome to date is seventh in the 1991 Honda Classic. "I promised myself next time I'm playing well, I'm going to try to get the lead by as much as I can and try to stay there and not fear what the outcome might be."
