Bryant again dropped one back with a bogey on the eighth. After a pair of pars, the New Mexico State graduate moved to 13-under with a birdie on No. 11. With that, he tied Richard Green in the lead. Bryant sank a birdie try on 14 to again tie Couples for the lead.

Bryant shot 67 on Saturday at Sonoma Golf Club, bringing him within reach of third-round leader Denis Watson. Watson scraped his way to a 68, putting him at 15-under-par - one stroke ahead of Bryant and Jim Thorpe (69), with Eduardo Romero (71) another shot back at 13-under.

Bryant will celebrate his career season by undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday. Next year, he will be exempt for all four majors for the first time and is looking forward to The Masters, which he has never played. Down the leaderboard, consistent Scott Verplank (69) finished third at 271, while Goosen (74) faded to a tie for fourth with Davis Love (69) and Vijay Singh (67), another two shots back. afp

Bryant turned 45 in November but he's not showing any let-up in his game. His consistency is a fantasy owner's dream although his infrequency on the first page of the leader board limits him to filler status. Still, guys like Bryant can be more valuable long-term than the more publicized young guns.

A medium-length, straight hitter, Bryant led the field in both fairways hit and greens in regulation. His game was ideally suited to a bone-dry East Lake course with plenty of roll, and the mental resilience he displayed to cope with the pressure of leading after every round was perhaps even more impressive.

Bryant, one of four leaders entering the round, had an up-and-down front nine. He birdied the second to take a one-stroke lead. He tripped to a bogey at the next though to fall one behind Sluman and Couples.
