Baron Haussmann

The 19th century château, the former home of Baron Haussmann, with its plain, majestic architecture set in the middle of a 38-hectare estate, is steeped in wine history. This excellent terroir of stony topsoil over a subsoil of clay, facing due south, is an incentive for the Lafragette family to pursue its drive for optimal quality : hand-picked grapes carried in trug baskets to the cellars for stringent selection on the sorting table, vinification in wooden vats, and ageing for 14 to 16 months in oak barrels, 40% of which are replaced every year.

During the 1860s, Baron Haussmann converted this hilly site from a garbage dump and quarry -- with gallows at its foot -- into beautiful English-style gardens, replete with a lake and man-made island, a Roman-style temple, waterfall, streams, and footbridges. Today, in summer, visitors will ... find boating facilities, donkey rides, and sun worshipers on the beautifully kept lawns.

Paris was transformed during Manet's time under the direction of Baron Haussmann, prefect of the Seine. Old neighborhoods were torn down to make way for wide boulevards; new buildings and bridges were constructed. Rubble was a constant reminder of both urban renewal and the removal of whatever and whoever stood in its way.
