  1. Barnes (Barnes, Hazel - Philosopher)
All in all, Barnes was a fascinating individual. He added spice to John Dewey’s life, and Dewey in turn helped to soften Barnes’ bad temper. They had a profound effect upon one another, not only as inspirers of each other’s works but as true companions. For all his ire, there is a humorous and human side to Barnes which can best be seen in reading the vast number of letters he sent to Dewey. Barnes died in 1951 after being hit by a car, and Dewey died the next year.

  7. Barnes and Noble
In October 2001 Barnes and Noble and Borders were ordered to pay $2.35 million each to settle an antitrust lawsuit filed by the American Booksellers Association, a trade group representing independent booksellers. The suit alleged that the national book retailers used their clout with publishers to secure cheaper prices and preferential treatment. The ABA claims the chains threaten the survival of independent bookstores, especially in California, where both chains have focused much of their expansion. Independent booksellers claim they fear that the chains will eventually shut them down and are, therefore, reluctant to take risks with authors who are of less commercial but greater critical appeal, restricting their selection of books.
  8. Binnie Barnes
British actress Binnie Barnes took several performing and nonperforming jobs, not the least of which was as a milkmaid, before making her screen bow in a 1929 sound short. She was leading lady to British comic Stanley Lupino in a long series of two-reelers (she later appeared in Lupino's starring feature Love Lies [1931], directed by the star's brother, Lupino Lane). Signed by Alexander Korda in 1931, Barnes worked as a nominal leading lady in budget features for a staggering 35 pounds per week (approximately 180 dollars). Her first important role was as Catherine Howard in Korda's Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), which didn't bring her any more money but enabled her to receive better roles. After acting in the London stage production of Cavalcade, Barnes was brought to Hollywood for the film version, but she didn't like America and headed right back to England, where after some legal unpleasantries over breaking her contract she costarred with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. in Korda's The Private Life of Don Juan (1934) (Korda's title department must have been in a rut). Contractually obligated to return to the US, she made her first Hollywood film, There's Always Tomorrow, in 1934.
