Barium carbonate dust has been reported to be a bronchial irritant. Barium oxide dust is considered a dermal and nasal irritant (Beliles 1994). The effect of barium dusts on welders was investigated under simulated working conditions over a one-week time period (Zschiesche et al. 1992). Barium fume concentrations were 4.4 and 2.0 mg/m3 during welding with stick electrodes and flux cored wires, respectively. No adverse health effects on the welders were attributable to barium exposure, but there was a slight decrease in plasma potassium levels at the end of the work shift.

Barium is a silvery-white metal that occurs in nature in many different forms called compounds. These compounds are solids and they do not burn well. Two forms of barium, barium sulfate and barium carbonate, are often found in nature as underground ore deposits. Barium is sometimes found naturally in drinking water and food. Because certain forms of barium (barium sulfate and barium carbonate) do not mix well with water, the amount of barium usually found in drinking water is of a small quantity. Other barium compounds, such as barium chloride, barium nitrate, and barium hydroxide, are manufactured from barium sulfate.

Barium ... has many industrial applications. Although pure barium metal can be used to remove undesirable gases from electronic vacuum tubes, barium's compounds are much more important to industry. Barium sulfate is a component of lithopone, a white pigment used in paints. Barium carbonate is used in the production of optical glass, ceramics, glazed pottery, and specialty glassware. The sulfate is also an ingredient in oildrilling "muds" or slurries that lubricate the drill bit. The bright yellow-green colors in fireworks and flares come from barium nitrate.

Barium toxicity ... disturbs the sodium-potassium ion pump capability -- another key feature in an MS profile. Ms could pivot upon a common disruption of the sulphate signaling systems in the body. Toxic levels of barium appear to disrupt this signaling system. Most of the health risks are caused by breathing in air that contains barium sulphate or barium carbonate.
