Barbra Streisand is one of the most spectacular and enriching performers ever to take the stage. She has proven herself time and again as the Queen of Broadway and the princess of pop. Her career of more than four decades has been one of the most successful of any female artist in history, and yet she continues to produce new material and go on tour.

Streisand [W]hile Streisand is renowned for her talents on the screen and the stage, she has ... carved a niche for herself as a highly visible, outspoken advocate for Democratic Party candidates and issues. An ardent environmentalist, Streisand claims that Republicans are to blame for “poison in the water, salmonella in the food, carbon dioxide in the air, and toxic waste in the ground.” While she urges ordinary Californians to do their part for energy conservation and environmental protection, one of Streisand’s many homes includes a 10,000-square-foot oceanfront mansion in Malibu that environmentalists believe is significantly contributing to coastline erosion. Streisand’s reaction to the environmentalists’ claim was to initiate a $50 million lawsuit against the environmentalist who photographed her house and made the observation.
Now 65, Streisand is the music industry's biggest-selling female artist, and second only to Elvis Presley in the all-time charts, ahead of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. She has not performed in the UK since 1994, and seldom been seen on stage anywhere since the break-up of her marriage to the actor James Brolin in 1998.
Streisand even announced the attendance of Virginia Kelley, President Clinton's mother, and Coretta Scott King, widow of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King. (The second night reportedly saw Michael Jackson, who sat near the stage with Steven Spielberg.)

An early low point of the show was their arrival on stage to bombard Ms. Streisand with smarmy flattery. Let’s hope she never records with these pretenders to the kitsch pop throne of Andrea Bocelli.
