In Sweden, more Barbie dolls have been sold than the country's current population. There is a gene in the Drosophila fruit-fly called the "ken and barbie" gene (abbreviated ken). When this gene is absent, the flies form without external genitalia. In The Simpsons, there is a parody of Barbie called Malibu Stacy. Barbie doll has lots of famous friends; Mattel has produced many celebrity dolls throughout the years.

Traditionally, Barbie dolls were always emaciated with small feet. This is because Barbie dolls have always been tortured. Hasbro intended for teenage girls to have fun mashing Barbie dolls in blenders, decapitating the dolls, rubbing Spandex and eggs on the dolls, feeding them to the household pet, and ejaculating on them. After all, the more dolls destroyed-ah, the more moolah made-ah!

The creator of Barbie was Ruth Handler, who with her husband Elliot, co-founded Mattel, Inc. Barbie was named after the Handlers daughter, Barbie. Ruth Handler was inspired by three smutty Lilli dolls she picked up in Europe in 1957. The Lilli dolls were modeled after a character in a German comic strip. Lilli was not a baby doll like most other dolls on the market in the 1950s. Lilli had a well developed, curvaceous body, a tiny waistline, and wore skimpy, tight clothes. After watching her daughter Barbie play with adult paper dolls, Ruth Handler decided to create a doll that would project every little girls dream of the future .

As the 1960s progressed, Barbie took on the style and sophistication of the decade's most famous trendsetter - Jackie Kennedy, wearing such stunning fashions as Silken FlameĀ®, and Fashion LuncheonĀ®. Another popular look for the late 60s was that of the American Girl - a chin-length Dutch-boy hairstyle available in many colors. In addition to the new fashion and hairstyle, American Girl dolls were the first Barbie dolls to have bendable legs.

The first Barbie doll sported a ponytail hairstyle, black and white zebra-striped bathing suit, open-toed shoes, sunglasses and earrings. A line of fashions and accessories was ... available. Buyers at the industry’s annual Toy Fair in New York were not impressed, but little girls certainly were and the Barbie doll took retailers by storm. Mattel was so swamped with orders that it took several years for supply to catch up with demand.
