3. Concentration Camps -- Nazi Concentration Camps
   Concentration camps are camps set up to intern groups of people for an indefinite period of time. During World War II, the most famous concentration camps were run by the Nazis. Established as soon as Hitler took power in 1933, they were designed to eliminate political prisoners. However, as Hitler stripped his citizens of protection against unlawful arrest, he was able to use them against non-aggressive civilian populations, especially Jews, gypsies, and homosexuals. They were run by the brutal SS and the Gestapo under the command of Heinrich Himmler. During the war, prisoners were often worked to death at industrial sites.
