[I]n 1930, after an unsteady start with three movies that she later completely disavowed, Barbara Stanwyck considered giving up her career. About The Locked Door: "No stench bomb ever made people walk out of a theater as fast as that picture did." And about Mexicali Rose: "Beyond any question of doubt, it was the worst picture ever made." She refused to even acknowledge the existence of her first movie Broadway Nights, a silent movie made in 1927.
The Barbara Stanwyck collection focuses exclusively on her life as a movie and television actress. It includes her movie and television scripts, audiotapes of her performances, some of her films, and her awards. The audiotapes were recorded from television and radio broadcasts as they were available and are neither in chronological nor subject order. Movie, television, and/or radio performances sometimes appear on the same tape. It is therefore necessary to read this section carefully to locate titles.

Born Ruby Stevens in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 16, 1907, Barbara Stanwyck was orphaned as a toddler and raised by her older sister. However, even at an early age, she was determined to be successful and land her first acting role on Broadway while still in her teens. By age 20th, she made her mark in several early Frank Capra-directed features, after which she moved to Warner Bros. where she cemented her place as one of Hollywood’s foremost leading ladies (including Baby Face, the infamous film - ... available from WHV- that created the production code). After her Warner contract ended, Stanwyck preferred to “freelance,” developing a reputation for shrewd business acumen and ending up, at the time, one of industry’s highest paid talents.

A self-described "tough Brooklyn broad," Stanwyck was born Ruby Stevens in 1907. Orphaned at an early age and raised by an older sister, Stanwyck began supporting herself through menial jobs, but all the while she remained intent on pursuing an acting career. Her fierce determination would become her trademark. Stanwyck began as a Broadway dancer and moved to Hollywood with her husband in 1929. She was mentored by the legendary director Frank Capra and co-starred with many of Hollywood's leading men, including John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart and Henry Fonda. In 1944, the government listed her as the highest paid woman in America.

In this screwball version of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, burlesque queen Stanwyck hides out from the law by moving in with linguistics professor Cooper, the youngest in a household of seven academics. There she teaches him the slang he needs for his research, and in the process, opposites attract. The role of the evil stepmother is filled by the police and Stanwyck’s gangster boyfriend (Andrews). This classic Hawksian setup (the disruption of an all-male group by a woman who is one of the boys) is competently fleshed out in Wilder and Brackett’s script, complete with snappy dialogue and double entendres. Stanwyck received her second Best Actress nomination for her performance.
