Santa Barbara rush hour starts about 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and traffic backs up in both directions from the north edge of town south past Carpinteria. It experiences Sunday afternoon traffic jams as well, as Los Angeles residents head back home from weekend excursions. Rather than sit in traffic, exit the highway and head toward the ocean. You may have to wander a bit, but you should eventually come to the waterfront, where you can go for a walk or stop at one of the nearby restaurants for something to eat.
